The World Bank International Essay Competition 2011
The World Bank International Essay Competition 2011 would like to hear your views on the opportunities, challenges and implications of youth migration.
Questions to address in your essay / video :
1) How has migration (international or internal, in a sending or a receiving country) affected you, your family, your community, or your country?
2) How do you perceive the benefits of migration (increased opportunities for young people, remittances) versus the risks (brain drain, illegal immigration and exploitation of young immigrants)?
3) What actions can you recommend for broadening opportunities for young migrants in their countries of destination and their countries of origin?
General
All work must be submitted by individuals, group work is not allowed.
One participant may only submit one work per category. However, one participant may (but doesn’t have to, of course) submit work in both categories, that is: one essay and one video.
All submissions must be made online via the Essay Competition website. Videos are submitted via YouTube.
Submissions can be made in English, French or Spanish.
Essay
Your essay may not be longer than 4000 words (about 10 pages of standard text).
Essays are accepted in the following formats: .doc or .pdf.
You are also required to provide a summary of no more than 250 words. The summary will be used by the jury to make a pre-selection.

Your video may not be longer than 2 minutes.

Not just impacting lives but doing it positively…
Keni Issac- Akintoye, a beneficiary of the Samsung Real Dreams Program majoring in Video Editing and Production has after the program began to build his own career. Keni is the Managing Partner, Deuce Nigeria and a Business Development Manager of Debb and Isaac Media Ltd (www.debbandisaacmedia.com) you can visit http://keniakintoye.blogspot.com or www.myspace.com/twinx to know more about this young man who has chosen to be different and impact lives positively.
Keni also serves as a workshop coordinator partnering with Williams (SRD Cohort 1) also a Samsung Real Dream beneficiary acting as a co-facilitator for some TV students at the LASU workshop, where they teach them basic skills in digital videography and video editing using Adobe premiere, he also helps them with scriptwriting and also inspire them for concept/content development.
Funke Treasure Media Mentoring Initiative birthed by Debb and Isaac Media has become a strong platform to truly touch lives through the workshops which they organise. Keni says “It has been pretty intensive with Funke Treasure’s broadcast skills (A faculty member) and also guest facilitators, we are moving forward and I see greater things coming off this initiative” The second workshop was held in September and the next one is scheduled to hold in December. 
As a Samsung Real Dreamer he says “It has given me joy applying my professional skills in the area of training and capacity building,” for they say ”to whom much is given, much is expected”

Summary
Design a website that will facilitate the migration of a print based Magazine to an online Platform.
Current Situation
The magazine is a monthly publication and serves as a resource material on diverse subjects for its readers and subscribers.
Being a resource magazine, there is a need to create an archive of its content and hence the need to create a resource website.
Proposal
You are required to design and develop a website that will have all the functions listed below:
- Good archiving system
- Display online version of every current print edition.
- Email Newsletter to be sent to subscribers every day
- Opinion Poll.
- Discussion Forum.
- Payment Gateway system.
- Article Submission from the public with different levels of permissions
- Email alerts of breaking news.
- Advertisement spaces

- Target Audiences
- The magazine and website targets Professionals and executives who are usually busy and time-pressed.
Goals
Developing a website that mirrors the print version of the magazine i.e. It should be user friendly, simple, informative and professional. The website should serve as an archive past editions.
Requirements
The design must be:
a. Serious, but simple
b. Clean and neat look (texts, images, graphics, should be sharp and vivid)
c. Professional
d. Not cluttered (in the sense of Facebook, Google, etc)
e. Fast loading (for busy people)

SRD students win prize at Harambee International Award!
The Samsung Real Dreams students of the Video and Editing stream were awarded the third prize in the just concluded Harambee International Video Contest.
The theme of the contest was “Communicating Africa” and it was designed to encourage the dissemination of positive stories from the continent in the wake of the almost incessant negative media coverage that Africa receives.
The contest was open to professional film directors, producers as well as students, and ran from May till October 2010. It consisted of two categories: an audiovisual documentary (max. 60 minutes) and Video clips (max. 5 minutes) for students 25 years of age and below.
The SRD students entered for both categories and submitted a 31-minute documentary titled “Omoluabi”: The Good Child, along with video clips from four students (Aanu Israel Anuoluwapo, Akinnola Olufemi Ayokunle, Macaulay Adunola Modupe, Uguoji Lakinbofa Sunday) the video clips attracted total cash prize of 1000 euros.

“Hope for the Future” Essay Contest
For Samsung Real Dreams Students and Alumni
Samsung Real Dreams team – Samsung and International Youth Foundation – are keen to hear your compelling life changing stories.
Students who have participated in the Samsung Real Dreams program in different countries, have developed a diverse range of job-related competencies including ICT training, vocational skills, life skills for employability, leadership, entrepreneurship and more. Many have also benefited from job placement and enterprise development services in their community.
The objective of the Samsung Real Dreams Essay Contest is for them to listen to SRD students’ real stories of achievement, success, and real dreams – how the program has helped them realize their dreams and changed their outlook in life. They hope to share the stories with more people out there, so these can be an inspiration for them and also help understand the SRD program more.
Essay Questions
- How has the Samsung Real Dreams program helped you realize your dream?
- How did the program help you in overcoming challenges? How did the skills you developed through the program help you achieve your goals?
Essay Type (you can submit a written copy or a video essay)

Eligibility Criteria:
Students who have participated or are currently participating in the Samsung Real Dreams program.
Essays could be submitted through two options. Submission through the first option, the facebook community (Samsung Real Dreams Africa) is recommended. Click “Enter Contest” on the facebook page and follow the instructions carefully. if you are unable to access the Facebook page, you can submit your entry to the training center where you participated in the Samsung Real Dreams program. In this case, the entries must be submitted with the information below, and a Permission & Release form should be signed.
