|Formal Inauguration of SMC Alumni Association|
The Alumni Association of the School of Media and Communication (SMC), Pan-African University was formally inaugurated on Saturday, May 23, 2009. The event took place at the Golden Gate Paradise, Ikoyi. The evening began at 4pm with a cocktail with guests present.
It was a forum to re-unite former participants of the school’s executive programmes, as well as to provide a platform for networking. It was also to elect the association’s executive members - the president, vice-president and secretary.
Prof. Emevwo Biakolo, the Dean of the school, gave the welcome address after apologizing for the unavoidable absence of the chief host Prof. Albert Alos, Vice-Chancellor of the school. Dr. Christopher Kolade, Pro-Chancellor, Pan-African University and the Special Guest of Honour, delivered a memorable speech on: The Role of Effective Leadership for a Sustainable Alumni Association.
In his speech, he told the audience that the loyalty of the association was first to the School of Media and Communication, second, to the media and communication profession, and third, to one another as members of the association.
Among the values he extolled were accountability, high standards, discipline and punctuality. The officials to be elected were charged with seeking to be effective leaders, who will be recognized for their laudable deeds rather than aspiring to self-gratification. “You,” he said, “are expected to be exemplary, highly visible, result-oriented, and known for an excellent alumni structure.”
The Pro-chancellor ended his speech with a personal quote: “leadership is not a title or status but a responsibility.”
At the end of the voting sessions, Mr. Olubumni Olukayode (CME 2), CEO OKAYHOUSE secured the presidential seat, Funke-Treasure Durodola (CME 4), Principal presenter of Radio Nigeria was elected vice-president, and Olufemi Adeyemo (CDDC 1), Brand Management Officer, Cornerstone Insurance Plc, was elected secretary of the association.
Dr. Mike Okolo, Director, Executive programmes of the school commended the chairman of the interim committee Mr. Peter Nwaochei, the vice-chairman, Mr. Omololu Durojaiye and the secretary Mrs. Maria Okorjior, for a job well done.
Mr. Peter Nwaochei gave the vote of thanks and formally handed over to the elected president.
The president Mr. Olubunmi in his speech promised to work hard and set the right foundation for the association and ensure an inclusive association. He also said his administration would guarantee a positive, pro-active, progressive and productive tenure.
