The role of the media in fostering good governance (transparency, accountability, prudence) within a democratic market-oriented regime has long been recognized in the developed world. In the developing countries, and in Africa particularly, one key obstacle to the performance of the media in this respect is inadequate education in the requisites of business and economic reporting. Journalists need specialized skills to understand the discourse of corporate governance, financial markets, equity, privatization, and a wide range of macro and micro economic issues, as well as business practices.
In one sense, the low capacity of journalism schools in Africa is to blame for the current situation. It is for this reason that the Centre for Media and Communication of the Pan-African University, in partnership with the BBC World Service Trust, has decided to step into the breach and provide this much needed training programme.
Objectives - Provide training in business reporting to practising (and aspiring) journalists and radio/television reporters
- Optimize the competence in business knowledge and analysis of reporters in Nigeria
- Optimize the technical communicative ability of reporters in writing and speaking about business
- Improve the knowledge of reporters about the business environment in Nigeria, Africa, and globally, in this order
- Provide segmented, media-specific training in business reporting for journalists, radio reporters and television reporters
- Enhance capacity to work in teams
Expected Outcome At the end of the 3-month training course, participants are able to produce news and features about business topics that engage their audiences/readers in clear, skillful, well informed, and relevant coverage that adheres to best practice.
Structure and Format This is a certificate programme, projected as a 20-day course, staggered over three months. It is to be run twice a year. There will be general introductory modules on the basics of business concepts and practice, and their analysis for all participants.
